Ensuring Safe Chimneys for Every Home

Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Learn about the types of firewood that help minimize creosote buildup in your chimney.

Choosing the Right Wood

Selecting the right type of firewood is crucial for maintaining a cleaner flue. Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and ash burn hotter and longer which reduces the amount of smoke and soot, consequently lessening creosote buildup. Always choose seasoned wood, which has been dried for at least six months, as it burns more efficiently.

Avoid softwoods like pine, as they contain more sap and produce more creosote. Burning unseasoned or wet wood can cause excessive smoke and a faster accumulation of creosote in your chimney.

Proper Wood Storage

Storing your firewood correctly ensures it remains dry and ready for burning. Stack your wood in a well-ventilated area to allow air circulation around the logs. Keep the woodpile covered to protect it from rain and snow, but ensure it's not touching the ground to prevent moisture absorption.

Use a log rack or pallets to keep the firewood elevated. Avoid storing wood too close to your home, as this can attract pests. Proper storage encourages drying and helps maintain the wood's burning quality.

Burning Techniques

When starting a fire, use small amounts of kindling to ignite the larger logs. Ensure your fireplace or stove has good airflow to promote a hotter, cleaner burn. This helps minimize smoke and creosote buildup.

Avoid overloading the fireplace with wood, as this can reduce the efficiency of the burn and create more smoke than necessary. Keep your fireplace damper fully open during a fire to ensure adequate ventilation, which further aids in reducing creosote formation.
